Clone Linux Boot Device

We have had this problem a few times. A drive tells us it is thinking about dying, and we need to replace it, very fast.

Same Size Drive

If you have a drive that is the same size (exact, don't think two 2T drives are necessarily the same size) or larger, the simplest thing to do is plug them into a computer, then use the dd command. Assume /dev/sdf is the original drive, and /dev/sdg is the drive you want to clone it to.

Create Disk Image

Hard disk images are simple in Unix. Just use the dd command.

dd if=/dev/sda of=./sda.img

However, if you are going to transport the image, either downloading or something, it is good to make it as small as possible. xz, pbzip2, bzip2 or even the old standby, gzip, work well for this.

Mudi Cellular Router

I have a real need for some kind of Internet communication independent of someone else's connection. I work remotely at times. I'm also a technician and occasionally clients need me because their Internet service is down.

I have several choices. I can use my T-Mobile Cell phone (which has a hot-spot capability), or I can use a dedicated hot-spot purchased from T-Mobile. I've found that a dedicated hot-spot actually gets a data signal when my cell phone doesn't, so I went w…

Serial Port

Very few workstations and laptops have serial ports, but they are still useful for connecting to network switches, routers, and servers.

I use a USB to Serial converter from Prolific Technology, Model PL2303 Serial. So far, I have not found anything which doesn't support it: Windows, Linux, even my Chromebook (with the Linux subsystem enabled) work just fine.

SSD

Calculate Lifetime

Most vendors beyond the low end consumer devices will have a TBW parameter on their spec sheet. This is the estimated number of Terabytes Written before failure of the SSD is likely. All vendors appear to grossly underestimate this value, but this is normally the extent of their warranties.
