Zabbix Client Install

Zabbix agent is in many Linux and Unix repositories, but they are generally fairly old. Additionally, I like to tie my systems to a particular version, generally a Long Term Support (LTS). As of this article (2023), Zabbix 6.0 LTS is current. You don't have all the latest and greatest abilities, but you have a stable system which will give you consistent, reliable results.

Monitoring Cyberpower UPS with Zabbix

This assumes you have a Cyberpower RMCARD305(205) installed. If so, you can set the SNMP on it, then monitor with Zabbix using the template at <https://www.zabbix.com/integrations/cyberpower>

I used the first one in the list, <https://github.com/zabbix/community-templates/blob/main/Power_>(UPS)/Cyberpower/template_cyberpower_rmcard305(205)/6.0/README.md, which says that it is for snmp v2, but it works just fine for snmp v1.

The Zabbix standard template for Linux has a constant value of 325 for the maximum number of processes that should run. On some systems, this is too low.

The solution is to change the constant to a

Remote OPNSense Monitoring with Zabbix

We had a request to monitor remote opnSense routers with Zabbix, and we wanted to do this as securely as possible. opnSense is an Open Source router firmware based on FreeBSD that can turn many devices into highly secure router/firewalls. As an Open Source project, there are many additional modules to work with such as Zabbix Agent and SNMP.

Zabbix

Zabbix is an open source, enterprise level monitoring system with either free or paid support. While it has tons of plugins available, you can create your own with minimal programming skills if one you want does not exist.

Zabbix uses a client/server paradigm, where your server contains, you guessed it, zabbix-server, and each monitored machine uses a client. This client can be a zabbix agent, if available for the system or SNMP. There are other ways of getting information also such as …
