Boot RAID on Linux

Debian and derivatives (Devuan) now allow you to set up RAID for all volumes, though it is kind of weird. I'm starting to use UEFI. Never wanted to on servers, but it looks like it is the way of the future. So, this is focused on UEFI. If I do another BIOS install, I'll write it up here.

Sometimes, the old certificate will no longer work on secondary packages. In the fall of 2022, we had a problem with goaccess. The way to fix this is to remove the old gpg key, and add a new one from the client site. This will show up when trying to do an

Summary

In February 2020, the “go to” place to do multiple PHP installations on Debian based servers decided to create a dependency for system-d to the package. Installing or upgrading a Devuan system that used this site would result in an unusable web server. The package maintainer, who has been doing this work faithfully for almost a decade and whom the community owes a debt of gratitude to for his hard work, determined that the package for Debian based systems would n…

Share your network connection

I had an issue where I was trying to set up a fail over firewall, but I did not have two Internet sources, so could not easily test it. I had a Wireless Hotspot, but no way to plug it into the firewall. So, I connected my laptop to the Hotspot, then shared that connection with the second WAN port on the firewall. Magic!

Serial Port Console under Devuan Linux

This document covers serial port console access, whether it be a physical serial port, Serial Over Lan (SOL), or console access from a Xen DOM0 to a Xen DOMU.

The first part is to create an entry so the grub bootloader exports both the standard console (tty0) and the serial port to the console. This allows you to monitor the boot process, but ceases at the point in the boot process where the Linux init system takes over.

Debian Linux was created by Ian Murdock in 1993, and went on to become one of the most widely used Linux distributions. It is the basis for many other Linux distributions. It was named by combining Ian's wife's name (Debra) with Ian's. See <https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/project-history/> for more information.

There are several ways to create a Linux terminal server. This is only one, but it is fairly simple. It utilizes Devuan, xfce4 and the TigerVNC Server.

Pro's: Simple to set up for a few users. Each user has their own VNC port. With TigerVNC, VNC session automatically resizes.

I decided after a few problems that I would not upgrade my Debian machines from wheezy to jessie. jessie appears to be more oriented towards workstations, and the decision to set systemd as the only realistic boot loader in jessie caused concerns.
